It’s a family affair
Meet the sisters behind The Creative Cakery Bake Shoppe located in Toronto, Ontario.
We are the eldest and youngest sisters of three girls. Cynthia is the magic behind the beautiful cake pops, the perfectly tempered hot cocoa bombs, the picturesque sugar cookies, and many more confectionaries. Cheryl (affectionately named the Tiny Baker) is our talented cake and cupcake baker and designer. She’s also our meringue creator, bakery cookie, and smash cake specialist. Our middle sister would definitely be our “pie lady” if she lived in Toronto, but that’s another story for another day.
We are self taught which comes with lots of trial and error (or tasty experiments as we like to call them), YouTube videos and some classes along the way. The best part of these experiments was getting to eat the material after! No matter how weird it looked…
We grew up with our mom baking and making desserts, whether it was Filipino sweet breads, cookies, or, in the later years, wedding cakes.
Our mother started baking as a means to fill a void. She was not happy with the offerings at the local grocery so she decided to take some classes. From then on she made all of our celebration cakes. If that doesn’t sound a naturally crafty person, then I don’t know what does.
Never underestimate the true value of “word of mouth” and referrals. That’s how our mom ended up making cakes for all celebrations, including weddings. She made both of our wedding cakes (Cynthia’s had 15 cakes!). She was the go-to person for every family event, big or small. When we even smell a Mocha Chiffon cake, it instantly transports us to memories of her hand piping all of her cakes decorations and flowers.
Little did we know we would follow in her footsteps years later, for the same reason too! It’s amazing how much knowledge you soak up over the years just being surrounded by it. Even as kids when we didn’t think we were listening to her constant pop quizzes, “I’m adding the salt now, do you remember why we add salt to the cake batter?”, we were. We heard every word.
One of our many favourite childhood memories is coming home from school and having a surprise treat waiting for us. Something simple like layered jello, or marshmallows and peanut butter covered in chocolate in those tiny pastel-coloured baking cups. Sometimes it was a parfait of just pudding that she would put in what we called the “fancy cups”. In reality, they were just tall milkshake glasses but to a child, those were fancy desserts. It would bring us so much joy.
We absolutely love bringing smiles to the events that celebrate those you hold dear, big and small. To allow us to be a small part of your event makes us so proud of the work that we do. Seeing your eyes light up the first time you see your sweet treat is one of the main reasons we continue to do what we do. For us, it is more than just dessert. Being able to spread joy through something curated specifically with you in mind is such an amazing feeling. Hearing “it’s too pretty to eat” or “is that actually a cake??” is validation that our passion is in the right place.
